One Year with GCC: Overcoming Challenges, Racking Up Kilometres

Jhonattan Chaves

Today marks exactly one year since my first ride with GCC, and I couldn’t let the day go by without telling you how grateful and happy I am to be part of this group.

I remember that first ride to Wakefield perfectly: I weighed 92 kg and was so afraid I wouldn’t make it, as I had never attempted a distance like that before. My heart was racing, every climb felt like I couldn’t go any further, and I was struggling to maintain an average speed of 22 or 23 km/h.

At the same time, though, watching you ride filled me with admiration. I thought, “You’re all incredible—how do you do it?” And I told myself that I wanted to become a rider like you.

That day, I decided to take on the challenge of improving every day through effort and discipline. My goal became very clear: I wanted to strengthen my body and mind so I could keep up with you, enjoy every ride, and not get left behind.

Today, one year later, I look back with pride and see that, through hard work and this group’s support, I did it: I lost weight, improved my fitness, and proved to myself what I’m capable of. I know very well that I still have so much to learn, so much experience to gain, and a long way to go before reaching the level of each of you, but the progress feels incredible.

I owe a large part of my growth in this sport to you. Thank you for the words of encouragement during the tough moments, for the advice, for teaching me on every ride, and for the amazing camaraderie. Thank you for welcoming me and making every ride worthwhile.

I hope we keep reaching our goals, overcoming challenges, and adding kilometres together for many more years to come!

Let’s keep riding strong!
